Washington (January 29, 2020) – In response to the Trump Administration’s rule on price transparency, the following statement can be attributed to Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP) President and CEO Ceci Connolly:
“ACHP member companies share the Administration’s goal of providing consumers meaningful information to make informed health care decisions and lower overall costs. However, we fear that the proposed rule falls short, placing a significant burden on the consumer and driving up costs.
“We have long supported efforts to make quality and pricing information more accessible, understandable and actionable for consumers. But they need real-time, patient-specific information tied to individual coverage benefits – not a massive published list of prices that may only frustrate consumers and likely increase costs over time.
“To fully empower patients, any transparency tool must include quality information alongside prices. As with other purchases, only when consumers have a complete, accurate picture of the service will they be able to best evaluate options and make the decision that best fits their individual needs. We encourage the Administration to elevate quality and value in health care by including this information.
“Transparency in health care is key to a sustainable, affordable health system. It’s critical that any effort include individualized and tailored transparency to ensure consumers have the information they want and need and to control costs in the long-run.”
