A Conversation about Women’s History Month with Fallon Health’s Randi Berkowitz

March 20, 2023

ACHP is committed to honoring Women’s History Month by speaking with women leaders within our membership about the work that they do in the health care industry. Women’s health is an essential topic of discussion, with women more likely to face cardiovascular disease and cancer in their lifetimes than men and increasingly more likely to face pregnancy complications in recent years. Leaders like Randi Berkowitz, MD, Vice President and Medical Director for Fallon Health’s Summit ElderCare Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, inspire us with the creative ways they and other ACHP member organizations are working to address these disparities. We are proud to lift up these voices and stories and celebrate women every day.

What are the greatest opportunities you face when considering ways to improve the health of women in your community?

I believe the greatest opportunity to improve the health of women is to spread innovative ways of caring for older adults at home.  We need to not only support women as caregivers at home, but also help them remain in the community and avoid placing those most frail, if possible, in nursing homes.

What is the biggest win you’ve had in the women’s health space over the past year?

Personally, the biggest win I’ve had this year is helping lead Fallon Health’s Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), locally called Summit ElderCare, in our efforts to maintain over 1,400 participants in the community thereby avoiding countless COVID-19 infections in nursing homes. Doing so also played a role in helping families remain together and with having these frail older adult women be able to mentor the next generation in their community.

Which women, living or deceased, would you most like to sit down with and share a meal… and why?

I would most want to sit down with Ruth Bader Ginsburg who pioneered her way in law without much self-aggrandizement and fanfare and focused on the issues that mattered to her with a strategic and brilliant career.
