During Becker’s Healthcare‘s third-ever Payer Issues Virtual Forum, Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP) President and CEO Ceci Connolly spoke with industry leaders about how the pandemic has continued to influence health care policy issues in 2022. The session, which examined the country’s Biggest Policy Issues in Healthcare Today and How to Stay Ahead of the Curve, discussed a wide range of topics from the No Surprises Act to improving and expanding access to care through telehealth.
Regarding the need to change the fee-for-service (FFS) reimbursement model, which creates perverse incentives for providers, ACHP President and CEO Ceci Connolly said:
“If when I was sitting in The Washington Post newsroom, the editor had come up to my desk and said, ‘Ceci, from now on, we’re going to pay you by the word,’ my stories would have gotten a lot longer and not better. And sadly, that is the economic system that we have thrust all of our wonderful doctors and nurses and clinical teams into. The way that they make a living is by doing more, not by keeping us healthy.”
