ACHP Statement on 2027 Medicare Drug Negotiations

Washington, D.C. (January 17, 2025) – ACHP President and CEO Ceci Connolly released the following statement on the inclusion of GLP-1s Ozempic and Wegovy for Medicare Drug Negotiations:

“As the only national payer group to push for comprehensive drug reforms, ACHP believes that it is past time for pharmaceutical companies to answer for their pricing practices. With an overall cost exceeding $14 billion—more than double the next highest drug in round two of negotiations— the unreasonably high prices for Ozempic and Wegovy are bringing the U.S. health care system to a financial breaking point. ACHP urges the Trump Administration to uphold the negotiation provisions for 2027 and continue to call on policymakers to take immediate action to further lower drug prices through federal transparency requirements and patent reform.

The over-reliance on GLP-1s as a universal solution for obesity is a flawed strategy, neglecting the importance of long-term chronic disease management. ACHP also asks for the Trump Administration to halt expanding coverage of GLP-1s in Medicare and Medicaid for obesity treatment until further long-term studies and financial analyses are complete. Efforts must be targeted upstream to prevent the harm caused by chronic disease on individuals and families. That is why all our member health plans committed to the ACHP Chronic Disease Pledge to measure and address the specific drivers of chronic disease in their communities by 2030.”
