Community plans outperform the industry on majority of Star measures
Washington, D.C. (October 25, 2023) – Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP) member companies offering Medicare Advantage (MA) plans once again outpaced competitors in CMS Star Ratings, leading on critical health measures and overall satisfaction. MA is the only government health care program that measures and rewards high-quality, efficient, coordinated coverage and care and community health plans are uniquely positioned to offer this level of care to consumers.
“Time and again, ACHP members look at the status quo and say ‘we can do better,’” said ACHP President and CEO Ceci Connolly. “Nonprofit, community-based, provider-aligned health plans have a unique advantage. They’re nimble and able to collaborate to ensure better health outcomes for consumers. Medicare Advantage continues to grow and ACHP and our members look forward to highlighting the smart policy recommendations in MA for Tomorrow, our vision for the future of the program, which takes MA from good to great for generations to come.”
In total, nearly 20 percent of all 5-Star plans were offered by an ACHP member company. Community plans receiving 5-Star ratings include: Aultcare; Independent Health; Select Health; and UPMC Health Plan. Two Prescription Drug Plans receiving a 5-Star rating were also offered by an ACHP member company: HealthPartners and Independent Health.
Buffalo, NY-based Independent Health was the only health plan in the nation to earn a 5-Star rating across all products in its MA portfolio. “Our deep roots in Western New York are only matched by our deep commitment to this community. Providing our members with the highest quality coverage and customer service is part of our DNA. This dedication to our members is what drives us every day and is what has enabled us to achieve this highest level of quality and service for three consecutive years,” said Michael W. Cropp, M.D., President and CEO of Independent Health.
“Achieving a perfect 5-star rating from CMS for a third straight year is a testament to Select Health’s member-centered approach,” said Rob Hitchcock, Select Health president and chief executive officer. “These ratings provide valuable insights into the performance of Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plans, helping beneficiaries make informed decisions about their health care coverage by identifying health plans that consistently deliver access to high-quality care and services.”
In addition to leading on overall scores, ACHP member companies excelled in key metrics—both in clinical measures and consumer experience. On average, ACHP member plans outscored non-ACHP plans on 35 out of 42 measures, including preventive health care measures, member experience and drug safety and pricing accuracy.
Overall, more than 40 percent of MA plans offered by ACHP member companies earned a 4.5 or higher from CMS.
The Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP) represents the nation’s top-performing nonprofit health companies, which serve tens of millions of Americans across nearly 40 states and D.C. ACHP member plans collaborate with providers on high-quality coverage and care — leading the industry in practical reforms, including MA for Tomorrow, our vision for the future of Medicare Advantage.
