Washington, D.C. (November 4, 2022) – With inflation at the highest level seen in over 40 years, nonprofit provider-aligned health plans remain committed to delivering affordable, high-value coverage and care to consumers. In its second annual Report on Affordability, the Alliance of Community Health Plans (ACHP) highlights the initiatives and proven outcomes from nonprofit, community-based health plans that ensure coverage is accessible and leads to better health.

As part of a commitment by its Board of Directors in the Health Care 2030: ACHP’s Roadmap to Reform, ACHP is pleased to continue shining a light on the innovative work being done by its members to reduce costs, enhance benefits and deliver access to high-quality care to improve both the health care system and consumer outcomes.

“At a time when the dollar is being stretched thin for many Americans, affordability is a commitment our members take seriously,”  said ACHP President and CEO Ceci Connolly. “We’ve seen the effects of the years-long pandemic on access to care – these innovative, evidence-based solutions are indicative of ACHP members’ commitments to enhancing quality of care and improving health outcomes for consumers.”

Key findings from ACHP’s 2022 Report on Affordability include the following. ACHP members:

  • Brought down premiums on silver plans by an average of 2.4 percent compared to the national decline of 1.8 percent.
  • Built trust with consumers by equipping them with tools to make affordable decisions, resulting in high retention rates and decreased costs associated with turnover.
  • Implemented programs to incentivize patient selection of lower-cost drugs and encouraged preventive care to decrease the need for expensive medications.

The 2022 Report on Affordability includes case studies of ACHP members’ approaches to drive affordable, quality care during economic turbulence and uncertainty. ACHP and its members advocated for valuable premium subsidies for consumers on the individual exchange and driving down prescription drug costs, resulting in more affordable care and optimal outcomes for consumers. ACHP was the only national payer organization pressing for comprehensive drug pricing reforms and with the successes of 2022 has doubled down on its commitment to advocate on behalf of patients and their families against Big Pharma.
